Schadenfreude

Blog assignment question #1:
Why do some people derive pleasure from the misfortunes of others?

A classmates slips, and a whole class laughs. A stranger on the street gets wet due to a fast speeding car running over a puddle, and one gets amused. On a higher level, a company goes bankrupt and another goes extremely happy. Why are there people who truly enjoy others’ adversity? Sometimes, a person just has to sit and wonder- what's wrong with them? Would it not be bad if our fellow was hurt, and with the pain, humiliation kicks in?

A primary reason why people do love seeing others at tight spots is jealousy. As is said, jealousy is one of the roots of evil, and is even one of the seven capital sins. Envy brings people to do drastic things just to get what we want, so being pleased at others misfortunes would be little.

However, this is not the only case. There is this matter of material racing, where one competes with the superficial riches of another. Little do they know that this is not all that is needed in life, but also being able to share these riches to others so that your life would be worthwhile. With the thinking of a typical modern person, the purpose of living would be to gain enough money to live comfortably. Therefore, those who live with all the amenities available to them would be envied by those who don't.

Yes, we need money for practically everything, but the natural way of things say we should live a life not revolving on earthly riches. Not all are blessed to be on top, and that's why we have to prove we deserve to be there too. That does not start with being happy at other's fall. Instead we sport healthy respect and compassion for others, and be contented with how we climbed the ladder to success. Let's just all be muditas, and rejoice in the happiness of others. :]
